Just in time for Christmas! JD Ryznar did red carpet interviews before the 2011 Channy Awards. As always, he’s hilarious. Do yourself a favor and watch his face during Kyle Reiter and Kate Freund’s interview.
I guess this closes the book on the 2011 Channel 101 season. I’m sure great things are in store for 2012!
A very creepy Happy Holidays to you and yours. Made (quickly) for Movie Night.
Channel 101 Video Week - Day 5: The last Channel 101 Classics of 2011 features the “Your Magic Touched Me” franchise. I’m excited to do one more year of these. Channel 101 has no shortage of great shows to spotlight.
Coming up on Monday, I’ll be posting JD Ryznar’s red carpet (minus an actual red carpet) interviews from the Channies.
Channel 101 Video Week: Day 4 - I totally spaced on putting this online back in September. Mike McCafferty’s “Quest” has always been one of my favorite Channel 101 shows. Every excuse that I’ve ever had for not making a pilot is completely invalidated by the existence of this show. I hope this does it some justice.
Channel 101 Video Week: Day 3. I stuck this in the Channies preshow because I liked the concept but lacked the time to execute it correctly. I originally had much bigger plans, but they slowly fell by the wayside as the days leading up to the Channies passed. So I present this, a so-so example of what compromise can deliver.
Channel 101 Video Week: Day 2. I made this Bud Light ad for the Channies and was really happy with the reaction. Downside: I now have a six-pack of Bud Light in my refrigerator.
Channies
As always, the Channies were an amazing night, preceded by three days of sheer terror. Working alongside people like Morgan Locke, Dave Seger, Julie Gollins, Tom Kauffman and Josh Sasson makes it worthwhile. Congrats to all the winners and nominees - without awesome work, an awards show would be meaningless.
There were a lot of moments from tonight’s show that will be stored in my heart...

NBC
First you came for “Freaks and Geeks” and I said nothing. Then you came for Conan and, again, I said nothing. Then you came for “Community” and I said…fuck you. www.save-community.com
Official link doesn’t seem to be working yet.
So…Channel 101 proudly presents the 2011 Channy nominees. Enjoy!!

Tales from the Heart
Being from Arkansas, I see quite a few of these “homilies” show up on my Facebook wall from old friends and family. This one is a doozy:
An 11 year old girl asks her father, “Dad, what are you gonna get me for my 15th birthday?” The father replied, “Daughter, there’s much time left.” When the girl was 14 she fainted and was rushed to the hospital. The...

Fall TV Review Preview
Last week, I took an E! Online columnist to task for writing a particularly gutless, possibly dishonest review of NBC’s new show “Whitney.” You can read my original post here if you want the whole sordid story. In the days since then, I’ve closely monitored the site’s fall preview articles, and I may owe the writer of that article an apology. It would appear...
Socks on the floor
Human memory is a bizarre thing. Of all the memories that come flooding back from a decade ago, the one thing that is foremost in my mind is the sound of my socks on the aqua green carpet of my dormitory hallway. I’d had 20 minutes or so to process what was happening before I decided to go to the lobby of my dorm and tell the desk attendant that America was under attack.
I had entered a...
Today's Review Review
I’m a big fan of reading reviews. I am, in fact, a lapsed amateur reviewer myself. And with the new fall lineup on the horizon, most entertainment websites are chock full of new reviews, previews, pre-review previews. And so it was that I found myself reading a review on E! Online for NBC’s upcoming new sitcom “Whitney.”
Full disclosure: I have no plans to watch...

“So, like, the scene had the dude from That Thing You Do in it…”
—
A fragment of a conversation I heard while walking to my car in Los Feliz that’s now driving me nuts.
What scene? What movie? Did she just refer to Tom Hanks as “That dude from That Thing You Do”?
There are only four men to whom this could reasonably apply:
Tom Hanks - God, I hope not
Tom Everett...
Erni, Chris and the great people at Wonders were nice enough to let me edit an episode of GAMEZ. This was some of the most fun I’ve ever had editing because I had complete control to take it wherever I wanted. And with that newfound freedom, I decided to go to a very….weird place. I don’t think Wonders will let me play with their nice things again.
I usually wait longer to post these, but this is the first one that I wasn’t at the Channel 101 screening to see the reaction for. I’m going into what I call a ‘lack-of-feedback paranoia spiral’. “Gregory Shitcock, P.I.” Awesome show. Have a look back, won’t you?

Sound recordist thoughts
“Hmm…,” thought the sound recordist, huddled over his mixer, “I keep getting interference and audio peaks from these body mics. In every take. Oh well, they can always cut around it.”
“Hmm…,” thought the editor, huddled over his keyboard, “every audio take has a lot of noise and peaks from these body mics in it. So much so that I can’t...

The latest edition of Channel 101 Classics - a fond remembrance of the ever-popular, often litigated “House of Cosbys.” Enjoy!
Moment of the week
I’m browsing the Blu-Rays at Best Buy when I hear a voice loudly exclaim, “Blu-Ray on a budget?!” I turn and briefly meet the gaze of a stranger, who’s looking around to see if anyone has noticed him as he browses the discount discs. 15 seconds later, just as loudly, I hear “No wonder. It’s stuff no one wants to watch!” I look up again to see the same man...
Sports post
As a sports fan, I’m a relative newcomer. I really didn’t care much about sports outside of Arkansas football and the St. Louis Cardinals until I started going to Florida State. Within three months, I was bleeding garnet and gold. And that gave way to an eventual interest in the NFL and a smattering of other sports as well. At its best, I think any sport has the potential to be high...

– Steven Spielberg, simultaneously apologizing for the god-awful revisions to “E.T.” and the god-awful sound ’enhancements’ on the previous “Jaws” DVDs, while also shoving George Lucas further adrift on out-of-touch island.
July Madness
Back in March, several Channel 101 creators launched “March Madness,” a creative explosion that brought us current Prime-Timers Legend of the White Tiger and Sex Teenagers (along with the heartbreaking cancellations of The Sequence and Gardening Warz). It also resulted in a slate of awesome Failed Pilots like Lamar Jackson: Black from the Dead, Out for Good and Gadget! Gadget! Gadget!....

Social Contract
To the clerk at AM/PM -
When I try to pay for a 12-pack of soda at your store and you tell me you don’t take credit cards, don’t take me up on my offer to put the soda back in the case. I was just being polite. It’s one of society’s unwritten rules. If I’m attempting to purchase something from your store and the purchase is not successful, the rules of courtesy...
School’s out! Celebrate this Friday the 13th by taking a look back at “Classroom,” one of the longest running shows in Channel 101 history…and one of the best. Enjoy!

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (2007)
Written by: Kelly Masterson
Directed by: Sidney Lumet
Shame on me. Shame, shame, shame on me for ignoring Sidney Lumet this long. I knew that he made “Network” and “12 Angry Men,” two of the best movies ever, and yet I’ve still…
This isn’t meant to be self-aggrandizing. Simply the best tribute I can muster for Sidney Lumet....
